Joseph found Theodotos’ villa more than spacious and his servants more than gracious towards the growing number of people now residing under its roof.

As he unpacked his few meager belongings and set his sleeping mat against the wall, a servant woman brought in trays of fruit and washed their feet.

Joseph relaxed under the process. He’d not experienced the hands of servants before. Living in the small village of Nazareth under the roof of a stonemason didn’t afford such luxury. Empty stomachs and dirty feet were attended to by one’s own hands.

Looking at his siblings, he could see they enjoyed the indulgence as well.

When they were settled and clean, the siblings filtered through the house.

James and Jude joined some of the other men in discussions. Assia and Salome spoke with some of the women who kept company with their mother. Lydia followed behind but kept to the rim of the collection of women.

Joseph shadowed his brothers as they met the different men who followed their brother.

Peter had already introduced them to the two sons of Zebedee, James and John.

“This is my brother, Andrew,” Peter said, putting a firm grip on the man’s shoulder who stood before them. “He’s the reason I’m here.”

“Jesus is the reason we are all here,” Andrew corrected his brother.

Peter patted his shoulder. “But it was you who told me of him and convinced me to meet him. Without you, I would still be fishing.” He chuckled.

“We are still fishing,” Andrew teased. “Just seeking a different kind of fish.”

Peter let out a howl of laughter.

Joseph was lost to the joke they seemed to share among themselves.

Peter wiped away a tear. “So true, so true.”

A group of three men came toward them from another room.

“Ah, brothers.” Peter waved them over. “Join us.”

Joseph leaned over to James’ ear. “Are they all related?”

“Not exactly.” James spread out his hands.

“This is Philip, Bartholomew, and James.” Peter pointed to each man as he introduced them.

“Another James?” Joseph asked before he thought better of the question.

Peter looked to the man and then to Joseph’s brother. “James ben Zebedee, James ben Alpheus, and James ben…” he waved to James.

“Ben Joseph,” James finished.

“Joseph?” Peter scratched his head. “I thought your brother’s name was Joseph.”

“I am,” Joseph answered for himself. “It was also our father’s name.”

“Joseph ben Joseph?” Peter howled again as he slapped his thigh. “We Hebrews are not a very creative lot when it comes to names, are we?”

“Remember how many Marys we have staying here?” Philip interjected.

“Don’t remind me.” Peter rubbed his palm to his forehead. “I still can’t keep all of them separated.”

“It doesn’t help that they travel in a herd,” another added as he approached the group.

Peter snorted. “You speak truth, my friend.” He shook his head. “This is Matthew; former tax collector.”

Matthew turned to Peter. “You don’t have to share that with everyone.”

“We all have a past, but Messiah is our future.” Peter smacked Matthew’s back. “But you are right about those women. They are like a pride of lionesses following their queen.
